Sporting Excellence - Term 2, 2013
Year 9 student Finn Gilbert competed in the recent NSW Combined High Schools Sailing Championships and achieved a great result of 5th Place from 144 competitors.
Harry Shaw's team finished runners-up at the U16 NSW State Water Polo Championships, losing only one game - the Grand Final - to a strong composite team from Hunter.
Harry (Year 9) had an outstanding tournament which resulted in the NSWIS selectors deciding that he was ready to take up a position in their Elite Athlete program. This program is only offered to 35 boys between 16 and 18 who are considered "Emerging Talent". Harry has also been selected in the NSW U16's Squad for 2013; this is quite an achievement as he is at the younger end of the age bracket and will also be eligible in 2014.
Harry will be playing at the World Youth Cup in Canberra in July, which involves International teams from USA, Croatia, Serbia, and he will also attend the National Championships in Melbourne in October.
Surf Life Saving
The Rees brothers, Jayke and Guy had an outstanding week of competition at the Australian National Surf Lifesaving Championships in Queensland. Both boys represented Newport Surf Lifesaving Club and helped their club to a 9th place overall, an amazing result for a small club.
The club's success was based on the strength of their male water competitors, of which Jayke and Guy are an integral part. Guy won a Gold medal in the Board Relay, a Bronze in the Swim Teams event and placed 6th in Board Rescue. Jayke won Gold in the U17 and U19 Swim Teams, Bronze in the Tube Rescue, was placed 7th in the Iron Man and 8th in the Board Relay and the Taplin Relay.
Together with Jayke Rees Surf Lifesaving success he also competed at the NSW South Wales All Schools Swimming Championships at The Sydney Aquatic Centre, Homebush recently.
Jayke competed and won in both events the 50m and 100m Free Style. Huge congratulations to Jayke for not only winning a gold medal in both these events but for also setting a new record of 52.29 in the 100m.
In May Year 6 student Wren Lockhart played in the HICES Netball team at the CIS Gala Day. Wren's coach for the day was Sydney Swifts player Ashley Weir who led their team to finishing 3rd overall.
Wren was selected as one of the top 20 possible and probable players and has now gained selection into the CIS Netball team. The CIS team will be travelling to Broken Hill to play in the NSWPSSA Netball Championships.
Surfing - Sydney Schools Surfing Regional Titles
This Year Pittwater House competed for the first time in the Sydney Schools Surfing Regional Titles at Cronulla Beach. There were over 170 students from various Sydney School attending this competition.
In the U19 boys' division Tom Harbutt came in 28th missing out on the Quarter finals by less than a point. The U16 boys also competed strongly with Isaac Smith, Tas Grainger and Jack Whaling coming 28th, 31st and 39th respectively, just missing out on the quarter finals needing to come 24th or below. Julian Revel-Read surfed a really smart heat and picked off some really good waves to advance him into the quarter-finals the next day. Unfortunately for him the swell dropped considerably making for tough conditions and he would advance no further than the quarters.
Jesse Starling surfed a smart heat and picked off some long left handers getting her through to the semi-finals. Her sister Tru Starling wasn't as lucky surfing against a girl who scored a 9.5, the highest score of the total event, and achieved 4th in her heat.
The story of the two day event for us though was all about Bella Stevens. Bella was a late entry as several older girls had other commitments. 12 year old Bella, who was surfing in the Under 16 Junior Girls division made it through her first heat with some great long rides and impeccable wave selection. In the semi-finals the conditions really deteriorated but Bella held her nerve and placed 3rd out of the 6 competitors and advanced to the final. In similar conditions it was a scrappy final with Bella surfing against girls that were both older and sponsored. She did herself, her coaches and the school very proud and placed 5th overall, a fantastic result!
Year 8 Student Mali Garling, recently competed at the State Gymnastic competition at Homebush. She did herself and her family very proud coming 2nd on the floor and 2nd overall in the state.
From the Junior School, Year 4 student Imogen Barnes recently competed in the Elite NSW State Gymnastics Championships.
While individual places were not awarded, Imogen walked away with a silver medal for routines on floor, bars, beam and vault. Well done Imogen! During the school holidays Imogen will be attending a gymnastics training clinic as a representative of the NSW Gymnastics development squad ("Bronze squad") for girls in the Elite Levels 1 to 3.
Pittwater House students raced in challenging cross country conditions, wet muddy and lots of hills to achieve great success against 750 students from 41 schools. Students Jackson Stensness achieved 9th place along with Gianni Stensness 11th, Cameron Currie 11th . Molly Wood was placed 3rd and was awarded a medal for her efforts. All the students have now qualified to compete in the CIS Cross Country Championships which will be held at Eastern Creek.
State Netball Champions
Mrs Katie Chalmers and Ms Sophie Dutfield teachers of J4 and J1 respectively, gave up all three days of their long weekend to compete in the State Netball Championships. They played a staggering 21 games, and….THEY WON!
We are so proud to have not one, but two State Champions on our staff!
