Sporting Success - March 2012
Rowing
Robin Molen-Grigull Year 12 completed a stellar rowing meet at the Australian Rowing Championships in Perth last weekend. Although battling flu like symptoms, Robin gained a silver medal in the U19 quads on Friday and followed this feat with a gold medal and Australian Champion status in his U19 pair's race on Saturday. Following on from this he will now compete in the Junior Trials for the World Junior championships. The Pittwater House community salutes you Robin for the breadth of your sporting achievements in addition to your focus on and achievements in academics.
Kayaking
The gruelling six day National sprint kayaking competitions were held in Penrith recently and both Fraser Year 12 and Simon McTavish Year 10 came through with marvellous results. Both Fraser and Simon competed in 9 events, making the A-finals in most and medalled in 4 and 7 events respectively. With some PB times, each boy has earned a spot on their respective National level team: Fraser onto the Australian National Junior Team which competes in North America in July and Simon the Australian National Olympic Hopes Team that will be competing in Hungary in September.

Throughout the term we have been celebrating the outstanding co-curricular achievements of many of our girls. The latest to be congratulated are Katia Molen-Grigull Year 9 and Elisa Molen-Grigull Year 8 for their excellent performance at the State Little Athletics Championships that were held last weekend. In High Jump, Katia placed 6thand Elisa was awarded with a bronze medal for a personal best jump of 160cm.
Pony Gymkhana
On Sunday 25 March Julia Percy Year 4, not only won a number of first and second places (first in 'Ridden Pony under 14 hands' and first in 'Rider under 12 years'), she also won the overall Champion Funkhana Rider at her Pony Gymkhana. Congratulations Julia on a wonderful result.
Soccer
Congratulations to George Firth Year 9) on his recent football achievements. George is part of the Manly United U15 team who won the NSW Manchester Cup. Last Friday they flew to Melbourne to participate in the Pacific Finals of the Cup where they reached the semi-finals, beating the eventual winners 1-0.
Karate
James Cox Year 11, recently won Gold and Silver at GKR Regional Karate Tournament on 18 March. Usually, he would have competed in the age category of 16-18 Years, (7th to 8th Kyu (rank)). However, on this occasion the age groups were combined into the category 16-34 Years.
Although competing against several older competitors, James performed an excellent 'Saifa' kata and won the gold medal, with a score of 21.9 out of a possible 24.
James also competed in the Kumite (fighting), undertaking multiple three-minute bouts with only 1 minute's rest between bouts, finally winning the silver medal, losing by only half of a point to a 26 year old competitor.
James' success in the Kata division qualifies him for an automatic ticket to the National Championships in Melbourne, later this year.
NSW State Gymnastics Championships
This Friday, Imogen Barnes (J3) will be competing in the NSW State Gymnastics Championships at Homebush. In order to prepare for this event, she has been attending rigorous training sessions for up to fourteen hours a week. Imogen manages to balance this training with her schoolwork and homework and we wish her the best of luck on Friday!
