General Excellence - Term 2, 2013
Northern Beaches Eisteddfod
Rebecca Williams from Year 12 performed at the Northern Beaches Eisteddfod recently. Rebecca entered three sections: Open Age Solo for Brass, Open Age Sonata for Brass and Open Age Championship. In the first section she was awarded with second place, playing Rag-Polka by Claude Bolling. In the next section she achieved first place, playing a movement from the Canticles Sonata, written for her, by Andrew Howes. To finish off Rebecca played the Trumpet Concerto in F minor by Bohme in the championship and won, receiving $300.
Illyphe Toumi-Cussinet from Year 6 was placed first in his section of the Northern Beaches Eisteddfod for character impersonation of Steve Irwin.
Extreme Eisteddfod
Recently two Year 4 students competed at the Extreme Eisteddfods. Eve Bowyer obtained a first place in the 10 years and Under Song and Dance section whilst Paris Younger received 1st place in her Lyrical Dance solo.
Music
Recently Year 9 students sat for the AMEB Exams. Ruby Loveday achieved a credit form her 3rd Grade 'Cello exam and Callum Howe received an A from his Grade 7 Trombone exam.
Art School
Congratulations to Joshua Copland-Nielsen (G11) who after an extensive selection criteria has been accepted on the National Art School Intensive Studio Practice course. The course provides an opportunity for senior school students to enrich and extend their study in the field of Visual Arts within specialised disciplines. The course is open to Year 11 visual arts students who are achieving at the highest level of excellence in their Preliminary Course and who demonstrate a mature attitude to their studies.
Air League Cadets
Congratulations to Zachary Fay and Siddarth Prakash (G10) who are part of the Manly Squadron, Air League Cadet Program. Both boys have been studying hard and have passed their initial flying exams; they now have five hours of solo "fly-time" under their belts. They have passed their initial exams in levelling, navigation, stalling, rolling and landing in a single engine Cessna.
Maths Olympiad
Teams of our best Mathematicians from Years 5 to 8 started work on the Mathematics Olympiad last week. This is a tough competition spread across 5 events and 4 months, but the teams are off to a flying start, particularly in the Junior Division where we had 2 students, Emily Zhou (J5) and Zachary Wilkinson (P6) who achieved perfect scores. Gleb Punanov (G7) achieved the highest score in the Senior Division. Congratulations go to these students on their mathematical skills!
Language Perfect World Championships 2013
The Language Perfect World Championships have come to a close for 2013. A phenomenal effort was put in by all students and the Languages Department would like to thank all those who took part and gave it their best shot.
Some amazing achievements were made by our language students, and gained us the following positions on the Global Leader Board: 417th overall globally, 103rd overall in Australia, 37th overall in NSW, 189th overall in French, 128th for French in Australia, 48th for French in NSW and 92nd overall in Chinese.
A staggering amount of questions were answered by our students across a range of languages.
Students worked hard for a place on our own Pittwater House Leader board and to earn themselves a place in the Top20, achieving both credit and bronze awards.
Hillary Challenge
This year Charli Udell, Kelsey Dunlop, Giorgia Whincup, Megan Rolls, Mitchel Howe, Ryan Blackshaw, Chris Mansell and Liam Pederson, participated in the Snowgum Hillary Challenge 2013.
The Hillary Challenge is an outdoor adventure race, which consists of a day of team challenges and a rogaine. At the end of the two days the Pittwater House team achieved 3rd overall allowing them the opportunity to compete in the next stage of the competition.
